1st => Gunnar Nilsson & JN Roberts on a 500cc Husqvarna Twin! in 21:36
2nd => Larry Bergquist & Gary Preston on a 360 Bultaco El Bandido
At various times during the race, Larry Bergquist & Gary Preston were leading the race on time, but a new yet dirty on the inside fiberglass tank installed at the start line gave them fits with clogged fuel filters. Many stops to clean out the filters cost them
precious time. At the first gas check, the first bike came in, the Gunnar or JN on a Husky. But the Husky pit crew was nowhere to be found! This was in the days of no real money to be had for winning. The Fergus/Griffin/Bultaco pit crew gassed up the Husky and away he went, eventually winning the race. In todays big money sponsorships, etc. I doubt if a pit crew would gas up a competitors bike? So the "what if's" have it that, if the darn tank hadn't been dirty, and if the Bultaco pits hadn't gassed the Husky... Bergquist & Preston would have repeated their previous years win!Malcom Smith completed his run into El Arco in 9 hours and 35 minutes, then JN Roberts took over, but got lost, fell down and blew out the head light. Fearing he'd run out of gas, JN parked the bike and slept until morning. Later he said: "That was the longest, blackest night I ever saw! In twenty years I'll never see another night so long." Even with all these delays, JN and Malcolm still finished first bike in 28 hours and 48 minutes, only an hour or so behind the overall winnersVic Wilson & Gene Mangels in a Manx Myers.
In 1962, Dave Ekins and Bill Robertson Jr. timed their trip from Tijuana to La Paz on Honda 250 motorcycles. Ekins made it in 39 hours, 54 minutes, Robertson in less than an hour slower. There were no official timers, so they time-stamped a sheet of paper in the Tijuana telegraph office, then time-stamped it again when they arrived in La Paz.
